This small guide is for those who want to install Windows 2000 on a hard disk that uses the Promise IDE connectors.

Normal install will cause the BSOF to appear during setup. To correctly install windows 2000 on the promise hard disk you need to specify the Promise drivers during setup.

Follow these steps.

1. You need a floppy disk with the latest promise drivers (download them here)

2. Start Windows 2000 setup, and REMEMBER to press F6 on the first screen where it says (Press F6 to install 3rd party drivers), as this screen:

3. After windows setup loads generic drivers, a window will appear asking to specify the location of the 3rd party drivers, select A

4. As indicated, press S to specify the Promise driver you want to install, you will get a screen asking you to insert the floppy disk which contains the drivers:

5. Insert the floppy and press ENTER, now you get a screen asking you to select the driver to install, (the default floppy contain the driver for Windows NT and 2000), you should select the Windows 2000 Driver by pressing ENTER:

6. On the final screen, press ENTER to use that driver:

7. Windows 2000 Setup will continue to load other device drivers, and load the driver of the floppy, for this, keep the floppy disk for a while in the floppy drive, until the setup finish loading all the drivers needed:

8. Continue to install Windows as usual, follow the wizards, and at the end, you will be using the Promise controller:
